Admission Requirements for Elementary Program
- minimum age of 5 ½ years
- previous Montessori preschool experience of 2 or more years
- developmentally ready, as assessed through an interview
Admission Procedure
1. Forward inquiries about Montessori to the Administrative Assistant.
2. Information and reading materials on Montessori education will be made available to inquirers.
It is highly recommended that parents of prospective students make an appointment to observe a classroom in session. If unable to observe, parents should visit the school by appointment for a brief orientation.
3. Arrangements for an interview with the director, parents and child will be made. Applicants for the elementary class visit the school for one day without the parents as part of the interview/application process.
4. Registration form and fees are to be forwarded, when all previous procedures are complete, to the school.
Interviews
If possible, both parents should be interviewed, as Montessori education is best carried out when parents understand and cooperate with the long-term program Montessori education requires. The following questions are among those to be addressed:
- Do you have a basic attitude toward the child and his or her potential which is compatible with Montessori education?
- Do you have the interest and financial resources to maintain your child in the program for an appropriate length of time?
For instance, three years in the preschool program is an optimum time to receive the full benefit of early Montessori education. Similarly, the elementary program falls quite naturally into three-year blocks of time comparable to the divisions in the regular elementary system; Generally, a student on the elementary level stays in the program for the whole of a three-year block.
Interviews will be scheduled as soon as possible after requests are received.
Decisions on Admission
All decisions on admission will be in writing and parents will be notified approximately 14 days after the interview. Decisions concerning admission will be final.
Admission preference will be given in the following order:
1. Children presently enrolled in Langley Montessori School
2. Siblings of enrolled children
3. New children with previous Montessori experience
4. Other applicants
When an opening occurs, children accepted will be admitted according to the chronological order of applications. As the actual timing of admission to a class is an educational decision, however, it may be necessary for the school to deviate at times from the policy of chronological admission.
An Evaluation Time
A child enrolling for the first time at either the preschool or elementary level will be accepted on a six week evaluatory basis. At the end of the evaluatory time, the director and parents will meet to discuss the child’s transition and orientation to the class. Any decision taken will keep in mind the best interests of the child. The school reserves the right to request the withdrawal of any child.
